20syl – Bet Dap Goom Bown (20syl’s BoomBap Festival Beat Remix)

Lengthy title, we know. Don’t worry. As always, there’s a reason.

Well, more like a story actually…

If you would, for a brief moment, take a step into our Rager Onions Time Machine (patent pending) and turn the dial back to the last century, circa 1999. If you know anything about Back to the Future and the workings of time travel in general, you just might happen to notice something a little peculiar about the way our flux capacitor works. Much like the TARDIS from every nerd’s favorite Sci-Fi television show, Doctor Who, our time machine not only travels through time, but space as well. As you hear the space-punk themed contraption power up, engage, and rear itself to a lurching halt, you will emerge from the dank chamber in an unusual place (that is, not where you departed from).

You have safely arrived in Reims, France during the famous Boom Bap Hip Hop Festival. Making your way through a gathered crowd of music fans you cannot help but notice the ultra dulcet, hip-hop-influenced beats of this next production duo. In fact, what you’re actually hearing is an original mix to the very same song we have included below by native French producers Hocus Pocus and C2C of 20syl. These two bros have been in the game for quite some time and it would seem that making uncanny hip-hop beats is certainly nothing new to this tandem.

We went crazy for 20syl’s remix of Schoolboy Q (the whole EDM world did) and we hope this next jam will fall in line. Enjoy this reworking to “Bet Dap Goom Bown.”

Yeah, we have no idea what that means either.

Schoolboy Q – The Purge / Rapfix Cypher (20syl Remix) [FREE]

All we can say is, “Hot damn son!” We’ve given this next jam more attention than the voluptuously busty beer cart maiden at your local country club’s golf course.

First things third, I don’t really even like rap music. Of course, when it’s all said and done, I have no problem participating in its enjoyment. Most rap these days (at least popular rap) is nothing short of poor lyricists muttering transcendentally ignorant rhymes over a somewhat catchy hook. Personally, I miss the days when a rapper’s lyrics were well-thought out, symmetrical and witty.

Regardless, this next remix is something that brings us hope in our current times of intellectual uncertainty.

Quincey Matthew Hanley, or Schoolboy Q, is one of the few exceptions modern day exceptions to the so-called ‘Rap Disconnection’ as we will affectionately call it. Despite the fact that his subject matter unfortunately coincides with the rest of the rap world, we feel as if his compositional breakdown and and unique style utterly captivating.

Now we toss into the mix another two young men by the names of Hocus Pocus and C2C who make up the production duo, 20syl. What this duo has managed to do with the original jams “The Purge” and “Rapfix Cypher” by Schoolboy Q is truly something to take note of. This may possibly be the BEST RAP REMIX WE HAVE EVER HEARD.

You heard me correctly. Just listen…

Pyramyth – Pharaoh EP [DUSTLA]

Well howdy there folks. Can’t rightly say I heard you fellas come in, shucks.

Welcome.

Today, we here at Rager Onions proudly present to you another release that’s fresh off the presses over at DUSTLA. And for the last god damn time, no. We are assuredly NOT talking about OWSLA. We heard the new Skrillex ok? We’re just trying to talk about something else here. So just drop it.

Moving on, D-U-S-T-L-A, who is definitely not owned by Sonny Moore, does indeed share a few common musical threads with its similarly monikered mega-label from LA. Besides offering listeners uncanny EDM jams with “massive drops and rough, fat basslines,” DUSTLA prides itself on how their repertoire of producers follow these intensely clamorous pieces of electronic psychosis.

Utilizing their superior production knowhow, the lineup over at DUSTLA, which includes artists like: Karetus, ak9, Spag Heddy, I.Y.F.F.E., Alex Mind and Shirobon, elegantly and almost effortlessly laces “melodic” and “innocent breakdowns” with other intensely complex, filthier sections to amalgamate a style truly unique to this up-and-coming label. Promising prospective listeners “fresh talent” and “unique new styles”, DUSLTA will keep that infectious, thunder-like euphony rolling out of your speakers with each and every release.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Recently, I was turned onto this next electronic dance musician, William Gonzalez, or Pyramyth, by a buddy of mine working over at the label (D to the USTLA). When I was informed that Mr. Gonzalez would be releasing a 4 track EP (which dropped about a week ago now) titled “Pharaoh” on DUSLTA, I was nothing short of ecstatic in anticipation. Then, after I actually got a chance to listen to this piece of art, it was all smiles for the rest of that day.

I mean fuck, I’m still smiling.

Employing a hefty portfolio of both modern and classic electronic techniques, Pyramyth applies his own brand of nostalgic, chip-tune influenced, glitch style to opening track, “The Pharaoh.” This has got to be our favorite of the quartet. From here, this Mexican producer delves into the more macabre side of the electric spectrum with “Gravity Gun”, an Electro House banger on par with any of the beats from the geniuses over at Knife Party, and “Taco Bass”, an enigmatically erratic yet melodic dubstep production.

Lastly, Pyramyth steps into a more unfamiliar territory in terms of production methods with his final song on the EP, “Miami Borderline Syndrome.” The result is a beautifully diverse, trap-resemblant jam with hints of complextro Nu Disco funk.

Check it out. Hell, while you’re at it, check them out!
