Crossing Genre Borders w/ Cazzette: Sleepless ft. The High

1

Talk about a change of pace.

Swedish duo Cazzette climbed the stardom ladder through their high energy, electro & progressive house remixes. Their unique sound, crafted over years of hard work in the studio, has developed into somewhat of an anomaly in the EDM scene. As each new release one ups the former, you would think that the Swedes would stay in their retrospective comfort zone in terms of their production style.

I guess that’s why I never made it as a DJ, or why I’m so sad all the time.

But enough about me. Cazzette’s newest original production “Sleepless” showcases the depth and compositional wherewithal necessary to cross over into opposing genre territory. Call this one what you want: we chose melodic, deep, future house.

Whatever that means…

StéLouse – Home [Subterra Records] *Album Feature*

This next enigmatic, neo-futuristic producer by the name of Ross Ryan is unlike any other EDM musician whose sound we’ve been fortunate enough to sonically indulge ourselves in. His latest EP, “Home,” which was recently released on Subterra Records, combines so many sounds and genres that after a few listens, our heads began to collectively spin. Utilizing his years of experience in studying and creating music (both on the computer and in various bands), StéLouse, pronounced “Stay Loose,” has hybridized a unique stylistic approach that we simply adore.

One of the most difficult aspects involved in presenting music to you, the listener, is finding a way to classify it. Not only are the lines between genres slowly becoming blurred by the popularization of electronic dance music as a whole, but we now find EDM creeping its way into every imaginable musical motif. If we had to begrudgingly describe what StéLouse sounds like in terms of what you’ve already heard before, lets say he’s an amalgamation of complextro style, nu disco melodies, future bass-resemblant percussion and vocals, and various other classic electronic progressions.

To be honest, each track on Ross’ “Home” EP is entirely idiosyncratic in its own right. We did the best we could with a sentence. Regardless of what it is, all you need to know is how it sounds, and that is AWESOME.

The first track off StéLouse’s release on Subterra titled “Spaceship Gurl,” vaguely reminds us of what we’d hear from a few of the artists over at Monstercat, only with a twist. Engrossing the listener within a bevy of glitched, nu disco space age samples, Mr. Ryan dials the time machine that is this song back to the early 1980’s and shows off his talents on the synth.

Following up the first track, StéLouse completely changes directions with both the original and VIP versions to “Hold On,” featuring another talented Subterra artist, Curious Kontrol. Interestingly, the song shares the same title as another jam from an artist that pioneered similar vocal modulations and downtempo, fine-tuned percussion pieces (which can be found on both tracks): Flume. An homage perhaps? We’d like to think so.

Lastly, Ross Ryan aka StéLouse wraps up his EP with two original jams, one that shares the album’s title and the other named “Start Something” featuring Kate Wild. In an effort to not bore you to death, we’ll let you experience these two on your own. However, we certainly dig ’em.

Give a listen to “Home,” which can be found below. Also, be sure to follow Subterra Records and StéLouse in whatever way you can to remain privy in regard to future releases. We’d hate for you to miss out.

Yellow Claw – DJ Turn It Up (TIGHTTRAXX & ETC!ETC! Remix) [FREE]

Every once in a great while, which in terms of electronic dance music releases, usually spans a couple of months, there exists a monumental song that vicariously embodies the collective sound of the most popular, universal style at the moment (a great example would be Martin Garrix’s “Animals” from several months back). To us here at Rager Onions, this next track is exactly of the variety we had just mentioned prior to this statement.

Big Room House + Trap = mainstream EDM right now.

We hate to see this because unfortunately, as a result, the two genres have become more watered down than the twenty dollar drinks at your favorite night club (the same club that plays these redundant “bangers”). And we’re not getting drunk off these big room anthems or generic trap songs anymore. It sucks and we hate to say it, but it’s true.

However, with that being said, TighTTRAXX and ETC!ETC!‘s remix to “DJ Turn It Up” by the recently deceased (may he rest in peace) and now idealized producer, Yellow Claw, is an utterly gigantic and surprisingly refreshing version of whats “hot on the streets right now.”

Give thanks to Jose Guerrero of ETC!ETC! and Alextek of TIGHT TRAXX for once again showing us that not all is lost for EDM when it comes to Trap and Big Room. The duos creative coagulation of the two stylistic motifs precipitates beautifully in the trap resemblant introduction and its reappearance during the downtempo section immediately following the first big room break. The two even manage to use that classic, big room “hollow wood block” effect at a BMP more indicative of a standard trap track, we love it slowed down.

Overall, Jose and Alex did a great job of cycling through tempo, mood and brought a ton of energy (and fun) to this remix from our deceased brethren Yellow Claw.

(this is where we pour a 4o out on the curb for YC)
